In both past and present, the family continues to struggle with the issues in their life, but in This Is Us Season 1 Episode 4, the struggle of having a mixed-race family in the ’80’s comes to a head at the community pool.
In NBC’s official description, “Rebecca and Jack take Kevin, Kate, and Randall to the community pool on a hot day and quickly realize each child is going through their own struggles. Kevin auditions for his first Broadway play in New York and meets a determined actress who is less than impressed by him. Toby runs into his ex-wife while at a restaurant with Kate, which sends Kate into a spiral of self-doubt. William is mistakenly reported as a loiterer in Randall’s predominately white neighborhood, which exposes deep-rooted issues of race.”
Props to the writers for not ignoring the very prominent racial issues that come from having a family with an adopted child of a different race, and even just the racial issues that today’s society is still having. Randall and William will probably come together in an even deeper way after this instance of racial profiling, which will either bond or break them.
Kate deserves to be happy, and this setback will probably set her back in her weight goals, too. Self-doubt doesn’t do well with dieting, so hopefully Toby’s ex-wife showing up doesn’t ruin that for her completely, or hopefully Toby will help to calm Kate before she makes a mistake.
And Kevin, poor, naive Kevin. His happiness is on the line during this move. Not just the move to New York, but the move to theatre, which is a completely different nature of acting than he’s used to. Good looks only get you so far, even when they’re that good.
