The Flash Review: The Present (Season 3 Episode 9)

The Flash Season 3 Episode 9
This winter finale of the Flash was packed and every character had their fair share of drama and life-threatening experiences.

Okay, first, The Flash Season 3 Episode 9 is a Christmas-themed episode? Count me in. But before all the holiday cuteness, Team Flash had to face plenty of challenges and we learned a lot about the history of Alchemy and Savatar.

The plotline for the week was to discover how Alchemy and Savatar came to be, and giving some depth to Julian. What’s the link between those two, you ask? Well, everything.

It turns out that Alchemy is just a slave to Savatar, and that he possesses people via a “philosopher’s stone” which is believed to resurrect people, but it is just a ruse from Savatar to get people to serve him.

Julian lost his sister in a car accident when he was twenty. She was everything to him, so when he learned about the powers of the stone, he flew to India to look for it, and he found it. He was possessed, and killed all his co-workers. On that day, Julian became Alchemy. The team figured it out, and locked him up before they realized he had no idea what he was doing.

Then, Barry revealed himself to Julian to make him agree to helping the team, which he eventually did. They wired his brain to talk to Alchemy and heard a very gruesome prophecy.

Alchemy was then put back into the box but he took control of Cisco by appearing as Dante and getting him to reopen it.

The catastrophe was avoided by a hair thanks to Caitlin just when Savatar was about to kill Barry and Wally who had come to the rescue. Barry threw the box through a portal to make sure nobody touched it ever again.

But by doing so, he accidentally travelled to the future, which speedsters are not supposed to do, and he saw the worst thing ever: Iris being killed by Savatar after telling him that she loved him, and him watching it unfold without being able to do anything to save her.

He now has five months to find a way to prevent that from happening.

The rest of the episode was thankfully dedicated to Christmas cuteness. Caitlin took off her cuffs to make it snow, Wally was officially accepted as Kid Flash and given his costume. Joe and his girlfriend were being cute.

Finally, Barry and Iris left to go to Barry’s new place when he asked her to move in with him in a speech that sounded a lot like a proposal. CUTEST SCENE EVER. These two make me melt into a puddle, I swear.

So if we sum up, Barry has five months to figure out what led to Iris being killed. Savatar said he had taken something from him and he was doing the same thing to him in return.

But Barry has to find what triggered what and go with his guts except one tiny mistake could be fatal.

So, will he be able to save the love of his life? Probably. It’s nearly impossible they will truly kill her off but the crucial question is “when?”. Will it be at the last possible minute? Probably. Will he make a few big mistakes along the way? Definitely.

But it is part of why we love shows so much, isn’t it? They keep us on the edge of our seat.

The Flash returns Tuesday, January 24 at 8/7c on the CW!
