The women of The Bold Type tackle some heavy topics in the next episode.
On The Bold Type Season 2 Episode 5, “Stride of Pride,” Kat and Jane get into a heated conversation about privilege, while Sutton wrestles with how to handle a situation involving her new beau.
Jane: Thanks to Pinstripe, Jane gets another job opportunity, but it doesn’t exactly end up the way she would’ve hoped. When she finds out the company is doing a diversity push, she’s less than thrilled due to how it’ll impact her chances of getting hired. This misguided frustration rightfully strikes a nerve with Kat and leads to an important conversation about race and privilege. As much as the tension between them was killing me, it’s so crucial that friends call each other out on problematic behavior. There’s no denying Jane has every right to be frustrated with unemployment, but she needed to check her white privilege. The best thing we can do for our friends is hold them accountable and educate one another.
In other news, Jane doesn’t hesitate to leave Dr. Ben’s bed and help Sutton with her “walk of shame” emergency. In the wise words of Leslie Knope, “Hoes before bros. Uteruses before duderuses. Ovaries before brovaries.”
Sutton: Sutton’s got a new man in her life, but fear not to those of you who want her with Richard or Alex because he’s definitely not a threat. She quickly uncovers something he’s been hiding in the most awkward and public way possible. As unfortunate as the whole thing was, it made for a hilarious moment that I’m sure the girls will look back on and laugh at. The discovery puts Sutton in a tricky situation, and she has to figure out the best way to handle it. As controversial as her choice may be to some people, I’m very proud of how our girl approaches the problem. Afterwards, she has a realization about her love life.
Also, in an attempt to make the best out of a messy situation, Sutton gives the funniest and most adorable fashion pitch to Oliver.
Kat: After the board members reject the girl Kat wants to hire, she’s inspired to change a company policy regarding qualifications to work at Scarlet. With a little help from Richard and the girls, she gets the opportunity to make a difference. As great as it is that we’ve been seeing Kat become more comfortable with her sexuality and relationship, it was nice to see an episode that focused on her being independent and kicking ass in the workplace. When she wasn’t at work, Kat was checking Jane’s privilege, as well as her own. It’s no secret that Kat and her family are well off, which can make her kind of oblivious to issues that her friends struggle with, and it needed to be addressed as well. The Bold Type does an excellent job of showcasing that the best friendships are the ones where you can put your friend in their place without jeopardizing the relationship.
For anyone wondering, Adena is at a retreat during this episode, which indirectly leads to some awkward-ish texts and moments with Leila.
This episode had that Season 1 feel to it, making it my favorite episode of the season so far. It definitely covered heavier topics, but it was filled with awkward, hilarious, adorable scenes ft. one of the best openings of the series. Season 2 has still been amazing, but the heart of the show is about Scarlet and the friendship between these three women: the good, the bad, and the ugly. And that’s what this episode focused on. The girls doing karaoke was definitely the highlight of the hour, and I rewatched it an embarrassing amount of times. These girls can sing, and it made them all the more lovable.
