The Originals Preview: Voodoo in My Blood (Season 4 Episode 8)

Hayley and Klaus meet Davina in the spiritual world to get important information on how to take down the Hollow, while Marcel and Elijah go on a separate mission to grab the last bone the Hollow needs for its resurrection before it snatches it for itself.

The Originals Season 4 Episode 8, “Voodoo in My Blood,” seems like it will be a wild ride. Similar to how they’ve set up most of their episodes this season, The Originals will have a slow segment of the episode that is mostly about obtaining information and an action segment that has The Mikaelsons, Marcel, and/or Vincent making active moves to one-up the powerful spirit. It seems like Klaus and Hayley will be a part of the informational part again this episode, and Elijah and Marcel will be the foot soldiers who obtain the last bone needed to resurrect the Hollow.

Klaus and Hayley’s mission with Davina

Davina is back for this episode and I can’t be any more excited for her return. Like many of The Originals fans, I was so angry and sad when Davina’s soul was damned last season by Freya and Elijah. She was one of my favorite characters because she was so smart, powerful, sassy, and willful. She reminded me so much of reckless Hayley from The Vampire Diaries that it was hard to not to love her. She was such an integral part of the show when she was alive and it seems nothing has changed since her death.

Because of Davina’s intervention, the Mikaelsons now have an upper hand they can truly use to defeat the hollow. Davina is now their source of great power but also their source of important information, because she is directly linked to the ancestors, who trapped the Hollow all those years ago. During their visit, Davina tells Hayley and Klaus that the Hollow’s only weakness is none other than queen Hayley.

This information wasn’t much of a shocker because we saw the Crescent symbol on the Hollow’s back when the girl took over Sofya’s body. Hayley is still the reigning queen of the Crescent wolves (even though it seems even she has forgotten this fact), and thereby, it makes sense she is important to a fellow Crescent.

However, what doesn’t make sense is why the wolf was so gung-ho to kill Hayley’s daughter, Hope. I believe the Hollow has an issue with children, which is why it keeps sacrificing them. So maybe Hayley is connected to its child-issue or maybe Hayley is connected in some other way through the crescent wolves in general. All that we know is Hayley is indeed the only bargaining tool the Mikaelsons have against this Hollow and you can bet they’ll use her to stop its terror on the city.

Elijah and Marcel’s mission with Alaric

Another thing that confuses me a bit is why Marcel and Elijah are doing anything together. Last time those two spoke, Elijah gave a self-important speech about how Marcel’s life was worthless. Although I’m looking forward to seeing Marcel and Elijah interact after that little fiasco in the dungeon, I was hoping for a much bloodier reunion (is that just me?).

Instead, we see Marcel swallowing his pride and his feelings once again to work with a man who tried to belittle him at every turn. Moreover, we see Elijah actually being the aggressor and not the aggrieved Marcel. Michael Narducci, the show’s creator, promised this episode would explore why Elijah has been such a horrible excuse for an uncle when it comes to Marcel and I truly hope he delivers. I am tired of Elijah getting passes for actions Klaus usually gets 2 lectures and an emotional fight for.

All that said, Alaric will be a part of this expedition, so it will be nice to see a familiar face from The Vampire Diaries. I’m still a bit fuzzy on how both shows’ time jumps compare, but maybe he’ll give us some information on how Caroline and the girls have progressed since we’ve last seen them.

The Rest of the Crew

The synopsis from PogDesign.UK speaks about Hayley, Davina, Marcel, and Elijah, but neither the summary nor the promotional videos for Friday’s episode touch on what Vincent, Freya, Keelin, and Hope are up to. I’m assuming since mom and dad are off to the spiritual world, Freya will be involved getting them there and she’ll also be babysitting Hope while they’re gone. Maybe Keelin will be with her new girlfriend, getting to know more about the Mikaelson family that she’s been kidnapped — I mean enfolded into through her new relationship with Freya.

Or maybe Freya is off babysitting Hope with Keelin, while Vincent is the one who is supervising Hayley and Klaus’s visit to the other side. Regardless, I hope we get to see our favorite faces in the next episode. I really think Vincent as a character and Yusuf Gatewood as an actor have been truly integral to the series this season. I hope he continues to remain in a large part of the narrative.

The Originals Season 4 Episode 8 airs on Friday at 8/7c on the CW.
