AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
Now this one has mainly been kept under lockdown. They had already released a video a month ago announcing the film has begun filming. Kevin Feige spoke on Josh Brolin recent casting as Cable in the upcoming Deadpool 2 for 20th Century Fox’s X-Men Universe. In how that will affect his role as Thanos in the MCU. Feige said that Marvel or Fox “don’t have anything written into our contracts about other roles that people can do.” Feige also brought up that Indiana Jones and Han Solo share the same actor, yet are different roles.
While not directly related, former Avengers director Joss Whedon has recently been tapped to helm a Batgirl film for Marvel’s biggest competitor, DC. A number of reports had been written about feuds between Whedon and heads of Marvel. Yet all seems to be good between Whedon and Kevin Feige. Feige said Whedon called him about the Batgirl project and wished him the best of luck. J.J Abrams brought peace between Star Trek and Star Wars, maybe Whedon can bring peace between Marvel and DC.
Avengers: Infinity War opens in theaters on May 4, 2018.
ANT-MAN AND THE WASP
Surprising the crowd was that Director Peyton Reed was in attendance. While it is still too early to find out how Scott finds himself back with the Pym’s and family after the events in Civil War (he is a fugitive after Captain America broke him out of prison) or how Hank Pym will be able to upgrade Ant-Man after Pym Tech was destroyed. Yet it was confirmed that Michael Douglas would return as Hank Pym. Hank will help Scott Lang upgrade his Ant-Man suit. Also The Giant Man persona will return.
Marvel teased two Wasp costumes. One worn by Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) which is an updated look at the one teased at the end of Ant-Man. The second was of the suit her mother Janet wore. Reed did not say whether Janet would return in the sequel. Yet since Lang found a way out of the Quantum Realm, it may be a good indication of the plot. Could the film be an adventure/rescue film with Scott and Hope going into the Quantum Realm (the MCU stand in for the Microverse from the Fantastic Four) to rescue Janet?
In addition concept art was shown of Luis (Michael Pena) in his van having been shrunk and inside a dog’s mouth. Guardians of the Galaxy are standing in as the MCU version of the Fantastic Four as far as cosmic adventures and importance of family in a team. Similarly it looks like Ant-Man will fill the family friendly adventure left by the Fantastic Four.
Ant-Man and the Wasp hits theaters on July 6, 2018.
Last but not least is Captain Marvel. The Marvel film that is 23 months away couldn’t have anything to show right? Wrong. Brie Larson was announced as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel last July back at Comic-Con. Aside from that it has been pretty quiet. Looks like that is all about to change.
While no director has been announced that may change soon enough. Screen Junkies Roth Cornet had an encounter with Peyton Reed. Captain Marvel was brought up in conversation, he said that a director was “locked today” before Marvel Executive Producer Jeremy Latcham quickly stepped in.
An announcement could come any day but who could it be? One name to cross out is Niki Caro. Niki was rumored yet since then has been booked for another Disney property, a live action remake of Mulan. Emily Carmichael was also rumored to be on Marvel’s shortlist. However she has now been booked to write and direct Powerhouse for Steven Spielberg.
Other directors rumored include Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland and Mad Men), Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World), Rebecca Thomas (Electrick Children), and Elizabeth Wood (White Girl). Likely an announcement will be made soon. While Marvel may not have had a director yet they did have concept art for Captain Marvel ready to show. How does Marvel have concept artwork ready before they had a director? When Marvel decides they are going to make a movie, the visual development department designs costumes and scenarios they’d like to see in the movie. While this doesn’t always end up on-screen, it’s meant to serve as inspiration for filmmakers once they come on board.
Three pieces of concept art were shown that showed what Brie Larson could/most likely would look like in the super suit. In all of them, Carol’s suit is designed to look like the 2012 redesign of Carol Danvers in 2012 by Jamie McKelvie.
The red-and-blue suit, including a high collar and zipper with the sash she wears around her, built designed more like a tactical belt. The suit looks less like spandex and more along the lines of armor worn by Captain America.
Interestingly it is the third piece of concept art though gives the first plot detail of the film. Captain Marvel shown fighting off giant alien robots, known to comic book fans as the Kree Sentry.
Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8, 2019.
The sheer amount of details from this visit feels like Christmas came early for a lot of fans. This great relationship with the press and fans is one small factor in why Marvel Studios has generated so much positive good will. Fans have months of information to speculate and get excited over until the next major Marvel announcement hits. With three films in 2017, it most likely won’t be long till the next big story.
