Marvel Studio’s began in a small office in Santa Monica that they shared with a kite factory. Then they moved to an office above a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Beverly Hills. In 2014 they moved to Walt Disney Studios lot a few years ago and had not been open to the public. That is until April 17. For the first time, Disney opened the door to press.
Journalist were given a tour of the offices which included a wall of Iron Man armor’s, murals and costumes of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and numerous other Marvel goodies that would make any fan feel like they were walking into Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Yet the big news that came from the tour was detailed on future films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
First up is the film closest to release, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. The Guardians bookend the night. Earlier that day it was announced that James Gunn, the writer and director of the first two Guardians installments would return to write and direct the third film.
This and the upcoming Spider-Man Homecoming sequel are the only films currently planned for post-Avengers 4. It is quite possible these two films will kick start Marvel Phase 4.
Gunn also confirmed this will be the end of the trilogy of these Guardians. This means that the Guardians of the Galaxy roster will be changing, with some members leaving with others staying and introducing brand new faces. To end the event Marvel held a special screening of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 for those in attendance. While the embargo doesn’t lift until April 24, the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. The film is currently projected to open to $150 million opening weekend at the domestic box office.
The final bit of Guardians of the Galaxy came from director James Gunn himself. Gunn said that the film will include FIVE after credit moments. The traditional Marvel film has two after credit moments, so it is an astounding number. A safe bet is that three of these will be joke moments inside the credits, with two major ones being used to tease what is coming in the MCU. Most likely Thor: Ragnarok and/or Avengers: Infinity War.
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 opens in theaters on May 5, 2017.
Next to Guardians, Spider-Man Homecoming is the film audiences know the most about so not as many details were dropped. The film has already had two major trailers that have given audiences a good idea of the plot. What was confirmed however was the web slinger will appear in Avengers 4. Meaning Spider-Man appearances in the MCU will include Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers 4, Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel before fans have to worry about producer Amy Pascal’s quote that Spider-Man will be “leaving the MCU” after the Homecoming sequel. Most likely this means the future Spider-Man films will have little to no references of the larger MCU yet still technically are part of the universe.
Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7, 2017.
