Veronica Mannion from HBO’s newest hit, Insecure, took the time to speak with us about life as an actress, working with the incredible Lady Gaga on American Horror Story, and she gave some advice to others who are looking to start a career as an actor/comedian, or really just anyone doing something they love.
Insecure is based on Issa Rae’s web series “Awkward Black Girl”, which follows the awkward experiences and racy tribulations of a modern-day African-American woman. Veronica plays Kitty, Issa’s coworker who tries, but fails, to be Issa’s friend throughout the season and almost sabotages one of Issa’s work projects due to her gossiping and prejudiced skepticism. Read on for our interview!
What is your favorite part of being on “Insecure”?
Veronica: I feel so lucky getting to be on the best new HBO show! I loved getting to work with such a talented, kind group of people and with great material. Everyone believes in the project and it’s created such a loving and fun environment on set!
What separates Kitty from any other character you’ve played?
VM: She’s probably the only character I’ve played who I wouldn’t really hang out with… She’s kind of annoying. Poor Kitty!
What do you enjoy the most: acting, comedy, directing, or writing? Have you been able to find a balance between your many talents?
VM: I’m still working on finding that balance! Acting has always been my first love, and I’m very lucky that it’s the thing that’s keeping me the most busy these days.
How would you describe your time on “Masters of Sex” and “American Horror Story”?
VM: “Masters of Sex” was my first on-screen nudity scene! It was on a closed sound stage, a very female friendly set and a closed set, so the crew was much smaller. I showed up to my trailer and my wardrobe was a tiny little piece of underwear string. I got two takes and was done before lunch!
“American Horror Story” was the opposite! The vintage wardrobe was amazing, and it was a huge production on location at an old mausoleum! A huge production with a huge crew, a crane, Lady Gaga on set doing her Golden Globe award winning performance. We did so many takes; I was there for 16 hours… It was incredible.
Do you have a favorite book and/or TV series?
VM: I love the book “Time Traveler’s Wife” by Audrey Niffenegger – trust me, it’s better than the movie! Also “Remembrance” by Jude Deveraux is a guilty pleasure of mine. Right now I’m really loving “Westworld” which just premiered on HBO! If you haven’t seen “UnReal” on Lifetime, do yourself a favor and check it out right now!
What advice would you give to others who are trying to find their passion?
VM: I would say anything is possible. Let yourself dream! And listen to the wise words of the talented singer Jewel and “trust your intuition – it will lead you in the right direction”. Man, even when Jewel’s sound went wrong she was still so right.
Any other upcoming projects coming soon?
VM: I just finished shooting a small role on Ryan Murphy’s new upcoming FX show “FEUD!” opposite Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon. You can catch me in the second episode!
