Desna and Virginia make mistake after mistake as Uncle Daddy begins his suspicions of who killed his coveted son. His anger begins to seethe and it becomes clear that he won’t rest until someone is going to pay for what happened to Roller.
The Claws Season 1 Episode 2 title gains clarity as the episode goes on. This funeral is not simply for Roller, but it spells the funeral to Desna and Virginia too if they can’t get it together. In Desna’s defense, she’s dealing with a lot in her own life right now and compounded on to that problem is now having to deal with two adults with the mental capacity of children: sweet Dean and stupid Virginia. Uncle Daddy is not playing around, which no one assumed he would be. However, with Desna and Virginia messing up at every turn, it looks like they’ll be found out sooner rather than later.
What You Don’t Do When You Kill a Mafia Boss’s Son
I did a forehead slap at least 5 times last episode as each event unfolded. Desna trusting Virginia in the first place was not a smart decision on her part. she clearly can’t make smart decisions by herself (i.e. her putting the grills that were used to identify Roller), so why would she trust her too? I would have Virginia attached to my hip.
Of course, Virginia ran away to go hide, while Desna had to face the fire by herself. When she stole the money, I knew it was smart, but I figured she was street smart enough to understand it would look a bit fishy if she all of a sudden had the money for a $20,000 salon after Roller died. Especially if the day that he had died, you went to Uncle Daddy asking for that exact amount.

God knew his child was struggling and decided to help her out by having everything fall apart exactly as the East Asian (not the white woman) owner came in to get her nails done. Well, I’m also sure the Russian Mafia had something to do with this; I just don’t have the concrete evidence yet.
The Tone of the Episode
This series is still a bit slippery in tone. Sometimes the comedy slows down the tension and other times the drama seems a bit forced placed right after a comedic part. This only happens in certain parts. Most of the episode is pretty seamless as I predicted it would be. Rashida Jones is a master at comedy/drama, combination shows, so I knew she’d be able to balance this in Claws.
A perfect example of her mixing comedy and serious drama is when Uncle Daddy initially finds out Roller is dead. He muffed the heck out of his wife after just spouting how much he loved and appreciated her, which was weird after the stripper scene the last episode. Of course, the wife slapped him back to treating her so roughly, because that’s not how you deal with grief.
However, when he slapped her back — her taking off her earrings were hilarious. She was ready to go to town on him. He had to apologize to her toe keep her at bay. I loved that scene. I need more of those. Mixtures of drama and comedy. When the pace goes from full comedy to full drama, the juxtaposition slows the episode and makes the transitions awkward.
That Ending Scene with Virginia
Now that Virginia came to Roller’s funeral all beat up pointing her fingers at the Russians, there will be a lot of explaining to do. Desna had already told Uncle Daddy Virginia was visiting her mom. What’s worse, Virginia went straight to them instead of the police — which would be a more proper response of a woman who was just beaten up and threatened.
Desna made the smart decision not to immediately point her fingers toward the Russian’s because that would look suspicious. It would have been best to let Uncle Daddy come to the conclusion it was the Russians himself, which was why Desna shot through the glass and made it look like a robbery. Now, Virginia has amped up the drama and the stakes. I wonder how these ladies will get out of this one?
