In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wendy Mericle (Arrow’s co-showrunner) teases the future of the show, where Black Siren will be headed, and an upcoming feud between the Earth-2 version of our departed Black Canary and the “new” Black Canary: Dinah.
Arrow Season 6 will be picking up off of the explosion of Lian Yu, but five months into the future, which means the team will not be the same as we knew. More importantly, we’re wondering what this time jump means for Black Siren.
Black Siren vs. Dinah Drake
Mericle teases, “I’ll just say this: She’s probably not going to like it very much. I mean, I don’t know how much research she’s done about her Earth-1 Laurel, but I would have to say that I think there’s going to be some sparks flying there.”
Does this mean that Black Siren may take up the role of Black Canary as she heads toward redemption? We hope so, but there’s much more before that’s possible. First, Black Siren is still a villain, but for how long? What has she done for these five months? What is her relationship like with Quentin? Many have expressed interest in Black Siren being in the November crossover and sharing scenes with Sara Lance to see what their dynamic would be (and we have yet to discover whether Sara even exists on this alternate Earth).
Whether you accept Dinah as the Black Canary or not, which we don’t, having these two strong women go head-to-head all season is unnecessary. Yes, we want Black Siren to assume the Black Canary mantle (and soon), but because Dinah realizes she’s unfit for it, not through force or anything else. Arrow does so poorly at portraying female characters, and they’re even worse at relationships between two women, so why do these two women need to be pit against each other? For the sake of drama? Let’s have a strong relationship between every woman on this series, whether Laurel accepts Dinah or not, she could still befriend her, or just treat her as a human being and not someone lesser than herself.
As for whether Laurel will find redemption, Mericle stated to TV Line: “You can expect much of the aforementioned villainy, sprinkled with the occasional wish for a turn-around, at least by those who knew her Earth-One doppelgänger. I don’t know if there’s any question about whether or not the [idea] of redemption will come up; it has to. Her father is there. Oliver is there. Everyone is going to be asking whether or not it’s possible to find a little piece of Laurel, the Laurel Lance they knew and loved, in there somewhere. That said, I think she’s interesting as a [villain]. Black Siren is a badass.”
Will Black Siren find redemption? It seems likely she will, and hopefully it comes to be. How long will that take? Probably a season-long journey seeing as the last time we saw her she was sided with Season 5’s Big Bad.
